Description:
The Mareko Fana Berbere Pepper is a distinctive long, slender brown cayenne chili originating from the Mareko region of Ethiopia. Known for its medium heat, this variety is crucial in crafting Berbere, a traditional Ethiopian spice blend used for centuries. The Mareko region is particularly renowned for producing peppers that are essential to this beloved seasoning.

Genetic Diversity:
This variety exhibits a genetically diverse population, occasionally producing red peppers, though traditionally, only seeds from the brown peppers are saved for cultivation. Most fruits are thick-fleshed, providing a robust flavor and texture, although some thinner-fleshed variants occur.

Historical Significance:
The development of this pepper variety is attributed to Fana Woldegiorgis, an agricultural extension agent and researcher from Haramaya University in the Harrar region. These peppers were introduced to international growers by Menkir Tamrat, a former Ethiopian tech worker turned farmer, who shared them with Fred Hempel of Artisan Seeds in Sunol, CA. According to Menkir, the original ancestors of the Mareko peppers likely arrived in Ethiopia from Goa, India, in the early seventeenth century, brought by Jesuit missionaries.

Physical Characteristics:

  • Size: The peppers typically measure approximately 3 1/4'' in length and 3/4'' in width.
  • Weight: Each pepper weighs about 7.96 grams.

Growing Tips:

  • Climate Adaptation: These peppers thrive in warm, sunny climates that can mimic their native Ethiopian environment.
  • Seed Selection: To maintain the traditional quality and characteristics, it is recommended to save and plant seeds from the brown peppers only.

Days to Maturity:
85 days after transplant, these peppers typically reach maturity, ready to be harvested and used in your culinary creations.

Planting / Harvesting Notes:
Start seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost and transplant into the garden well after the danger of frost has passed. Keep seedlings moist but not waterlogged. Initial deep watering is crucial post-transplant, and for maximum productivity, provide regular irrigation and ensure plants receive full sun.

This pepper not only brings a piece of Ethiopian culinary tradition to gardens around the world but also continues to be a symbol of the rich agricultural and cultural heritage of its region.
