- Saran wrap to cover trays
- Toothpicks
- Trowel or hand shovel for soil handling
Preparation Steps:
- Ensure all tools and materials are clean and ready for use.
- Label each tray or pot with the date and tomato variety using a permanent marker.
Step 2: Sow Seeds
Sowing Instructions:
- Moisten the soil with water until it is almost saturated but not dripping.
- Fill your starter trays or pots almost to the top with the moistened soil, avoiding soil compression.
- Using a dibbler or the end of a marker, create a 1/4" deep and wide hole in the soil.
- Place one tomato seed in each hole. Cover the seed lightly with soil.
- Use a damp toothpick for precise seed placement if necessary.
- Label each tray or pot with the tomato variety and sowing date using the plant tags.
Step 3: Grow Your Starters
Growing Conditions:
- Cover trays or pots with Saran wrap to maintain moisture until seedlings emerge.
- Place in a warm area where temperatures consistently exceed 65°F.
- Ensure sufficient light either from a greenhouse, indoor grow lights, or a sunny windowsill.
Care Tips:
- Monitor soil moisture and water gently to keep the soil moist but not waterlogged.
- Allow plants to grow for 4-6 weeks until they are 6-10" tall and have developed 2-3 sets of true leaves before transplanting.
Step 4: Transplant
Transplanting Instructions:
- Choose a sunny spot in your garden or a larger pot for transplanting.
- Dig a hole using a trowel or hand shovel, large enough to accommodate the root ball of your starter plant.
- Submerge two-thirds of the plant's stem into the hole, ensuring the first true leaves are just above the soil surface.
- Fill the hole with soil and press gently around the base of the plant.
Step 5: Support Plant Growth
Support and Maintenance:
- Use stakes, cages, or trellises to support the growing tomato plants as they become taller and heavier.
- Position plants to receive 6-8 hours of light daily, supplement with grow lights if necessary.
- Water regularly to maintain soil moisture without making it soggy.
- Apply fertilizer (NPK) and any desired amendments to promote healthy growth.
